If you enjoy walking the beach looking for seashells, then Sanibel Island in Lee County Florida is the place for you! It’s best place on earth to find seashells in our opinion. We also enjoyed swimming and biking on Sanibel Island.
The sun is very intense in this region due to its proximity to the equator. We traveled there the end of April and mostly went outside after 5pm for that reason because the UV index was 11.
We had never seen so many seashells in one place! They are all over the beach and at the coastline edge. Watch out for the sandfleas at dawn and dusk. Of course the best time of day is low tide or after a storm. Some say the best place to find seashells is Bowman’s Beach. The photo was taken at Sanibel Beach. There are so many different species of seashells.
Perhaps you could consider a stop at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum. They have a lovely exhibit of seashells and more. The museum and aquarium is open daily from 10am – 5pm. Parking at the museum is free. We spent a few hours viewing the exhibits and the short movie. There are discounts for Seniors (65+) and Veterans and lower admission prices for children, youth, students and educators.
When your hot and want to cool off a trip to Joey’s Custard was our favorite place to go! Delicious! Joey’s Custard is a local and family Veteran-owned small business. On September 28, 2022 Hurricane Ian completed flooded and destroyed our beloved Joey’s Custard. Re-opening this Iconic Sanibel Island shop as soon as Bailey’s Center is rebuilt is planned for mid-2025.
